Gojo School
Project Type
Competition
Date
April 2023
Location
Ethiopia
The goal of the project is to replicate the education model of the Gaba Kemisa Preschool, and create satellite preschools at both Dillu and Hiddi Elementary schools.
The architectural typology of the proposal is inspired by the Ethiopian “gojobet”, local round huts made of clay with a conical thatched roof. The kindergarten is made up of modular elements and the design allows versatility and easy adaptation to new functions.
The project blends modern with traditional materials and techniques.
Following the NGO ́s indication, the load-bearing structure is made of reinforced concrete, while the masonry wall is Stabilised Soil Blocks (SSB), which offers lower construction costs and can be produced by non-specialised workers.
The use of local materials, such as eucalyptus wood and locally grown thatch, ensures an easy maintenance and long-lasting durability. The SSB walls are painted with natural clays, mixed with water and a light glue to protect areas that are exposed to the rain, and the inner spaces have a clay court floor, which is polished and oiled.
